Nine assistance to the research in Salamanca province

The Spanish Association against Cancer in Salamanca has taken a law on the occasion of the AICC 2024 offer to be developed in the province. President of the Spanish Society against Cancer in Salanka, Angel Lausada, CSIC Research Professor and Director of the Cancer Research Center (University of Salanka, CSIC and Cancer Research Foundation at the University of Salanka), Dr. Xosé Bustelo. They were accompanied by the scientific director of the Scientific Foundation of the Spanish Association against Cancer, Dr. Marta Puyol and Deputy Research Advisor to the University of Salanka, Jose Miguel Matius Rocco.
Ánegel Losada stressed that this aid, just like all that the association promotes, has the main goal of increasing cancer to contribute to overcoming 70 % in 2030, improving the treatments that patients receive and improving the quality of their lives.
In addition to delivering diplomas, during this event, there were many projects that the association promoted in a round table dedicated to the talent in which Pablo Rodriguez, researcher at the Cancer Research Center (CSIC – University of Salanka) and Ciberonc thanks to the assistance of the association in Salamanca, Laura Corvo, clinical assistance from clinical assistance for the year 2024, Dr. Sandra Planco, the main researcher of the Epitranscriptomical Group, Cancer and CSIC President of the Cancer Research Center (CSIC) and the beneficiary of swords and cancer from Salamans and Dr. Isidro Sánchez, granted Transcan aid.

During this schedule of dialogue, the commitment to the talent and support it provides to the research profession in all its stages was clear from the beginning of unified projects. By helping it, the association also enhances new and innovative ideas, facilitates participation in Spanish groups in international networks and encourages clinical research, always with a clear translation approach for patients.
The new accreditation assistance was also presented to the association’s scientific basis, and was granted to the Cancer Research Center, and 12 other national centers, in appreciation of its scientific distinction and the quality of its administration, with the aim of enhancing its national and international influence. To talk about this, they participated in the table entitled “Search for Excellence”, Dr. Xosé R. Bustelo, CIC Director, Dr. David Santamaria. The main researcher for molecular cancer mechanisms and CSIC program at the Cancer Research Center (CSIC) and AECC Excellence Coordinator – RAS cancer and Dr. Marta Puyol, the scientific director of the scientific basis of the Spanish Association against Cancer. Since 2018, the association against cancer has supported those centers in Spain, which stands out for its excellence in cancer research and quality management, including the Salamana Cancer Research Center.
Projects to reach 70 % survival in cancer
During this event, projects and researchers who benefit from the association’s investment in the research were presented. Dr. Sandra Blanco Benavinti works thanks to one of this aid in developing innovative treatments that slow down cancer, using a revolutionary approach that depends on attacking some adjustments to the RNA that contributes to the development of cancer (project). For his part, pre -researcher Pablo Rodriguez Ramos begins his scientific career in the investigation of new treatments for the cancelors produced by the mutations in a groom gene, such as the lung, pancreas or colon tumors, which focus on SOS proteins as possible targets for treatment (project).
Dr. Issidro Sanchez Garcia is a researcher at the IBSAL Medical Research Institute (IBSAL) and leads the group that participates in this international project to search for signs of Lagine that allows the identification of any boys and girls at the risk of leukemia in order to anticipate illness and continue to develop thanks to assistance in the association (project).
Dr. Matthias Droston, a CIC researcher, will receive aid to public projects with the aim of developing new drugs, which can be used in conjunction with current treatments, in order to improve their effectiveness and increase the survival of patients with lung cancer (project).

In the case of Christina Zazo Galligo, Melina Timon Matthews and Adrian Garcia Fernadies achieved aid. On the other hand, Laura Corfu Felix has received help to expand her training as a doctor and update in biomedical research.
Oncology research, priority
At present, the condition of cancer is diagnosed in Spain every two minutes. 1 of every two and 1 in 3 women will develop cancer throughout their lives. Consequently, the promotion of research should be a priority for the entire society, including governments, companies and institutions.
In total, in 2024 the association granted 257 assistance with a total contribution of 32 million euros. At the national level, the association supports a network of more than 2,300 researchers and researchers, through 750 Aid and 143 million euros. AECC 2024 Aids covers all stages of the research profession and its strategic lines: increasing financing with a special focus on low survival cancers, attracting research talents to enhance job stability of researchers, enhance innovation and clinical research so that the results reach the patient and enhance clinical research.
