Democracy and the scientific method opinion

The current Trump administration has broken large -scale front attacks against the American academic scientific system, one of the most growing (if not the most developed) in the world and the reception and scientific training center of citizens all over the world. Public institutes such as centers of control and prevention of diseases and the national health institutes, the National Science Corporation (which have a similar role to the Portuguese Science and Technology Foundation), and the universities of the first line in Colombia, Stanford, Johns Hopkins, Harvard, Cornell, University of Pennsylvania, Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Large budget discountsControl of scientific projects, attempts to destroy archives, scientific studies, and social science fields.

For example, very tangible, there is news about significant discounts in the number of students who will be accepted in the near future in doctoral programs in these universities, with very severe consequences for the future of the United States and the global community.

It has a tremendous meaning that the fact that The actual x Secretary of Health and Human ServicesRobert F. Kennedy JuniorAfter knew hostile stances, especially with regard to the progress of medicine in vaccination, which, globally, it was recognized over the years and the protection of millions of human life around this world.

In this strange and new historical context, in which the wicked dangerous weakens and fails to one of the most advanced democratic societies in the world (in several ways), a brief reflection will be used on the role of the scientific method in modern democratic societies.

In addition to freedom of expression, religious freedom, freedom of associations, holy respect for the physical and moral integrity of all citizens, and celebrating their diversity, and regardless of their origin, race, beliefs, sexual tendency, and modern democratic gatherings, they should be worthy of this noble appointment.

In these societies, the scientific method (not another!) Is the primary and necessary component of teaching and developing scientific knowledge.

In the constitution of the Portuguese Republic, in Articles 73 to 77, it is specifically mentioned that it is the state’s duty to ensure free teaching and the development of science as well as the duty to give it to everyone.

The development of science is not exclusive to democratic societies. For example, among many others, in the deceased Soviet regime, one of the most barbaric products in modern history, the first line in the world has flourished all over the world. (Certainly, many of the brightest mathematicians who have suffered from the Soviet regime used their athletic work as a way to escape the totalitarian persecution of the society in which they lived.)

If it is true that there may be scientific development without democracy, however, there can be no democracy without scientific development and without strict respect for the role of the scientific method in teaching and developing society in general.

In the case of the United States, it is also worth noting the huge dose of the mockery of the current political panorama. The current and future enrichment of some of the few surrounding the administration and its impact decisively depends on the continuous scientific and technological development. Is there a risk of scientific and technological progress in some areas that are monopolized by these interests, through progressive weakness and proposal for the academic scientific system?

Currently, and even in the most dangerous extremist political media more compatible with the Trump administration, Europe appears to be free of this kind of terrible temptation to a civilized setback. This may be due to the danger of a very naive or optimistic interpretation, for the global respect for scientific education, at the general level of the education of the European population and lack of confidence in the dispute regarding the anti -Djram discourse, which makes it useless politically.

We know that Europeans keep this feature. We know, everyone who loves democracy, protecting and cultivating something that increases us, and who, in a society we consider “equal” for us, are exposed to a bad attack: respect for the structural role that the scientific method plays in democratic societies.
