Can chocolate help at PMS? Check the pros and cons health

Pre -menstruation tension (PMS) is a period before menstruation and can cause a number of physical and emotional symptoms such as anxiety, body aches and mood swings. For many women, the consumption of chocolate during these most sensitive days is almost inevitable – and science proves that it can actually help.

According to the Brazilian Society of Nutrition Science (ABRAN), chocolate with the highest cocoa content stimulates the production of serotonin, the neurotransmitter associated with luxury and pleasure. This contributes to relieving symptoms such as anxiety, irritation and sadness.

However, it is important to make conscious options. Milk or stuffed chocolate, the most consumed, has high levels of sugar and saturated fat, which can increase symptoms such as swelling, fluid retaining and mood swings.

A Vituria Cardoso specialist advises that it is necessary to maintain moderation and choose chocolate with at least 70 % of cocoa. He says: “It provides more health benefits and has less negative effects on the body during this period of greater physical and emotional sensitivity. It should be noted that health options help reduce unwanted effects of phenomena, and enhance physical and emotional balance during this period.”

He stresses that when consumed by balance, chocolate can be useful. “Chocolate can be a large ally of PMS. It stimulates the production of serotonin, a substance associated with a feeling of pleasure and well -being, and contains minerals that help relax the muscles and reduce the typical discomfort for this period.”

The dietitian Palomuz Kerez also defends the consumption of dark chocolate. “They have a significant effect on the cardiovascular system, which contains active biological compounds that have a powerful antioxidant activity, able to reduce blood pressure, help prevent heart disease, low cholesterol, and serotonin can stimulate the hormone responsible for a good mood.”

Regarding specific advantages during the PMS, Palom explains: “During the pre -menstruation period, a sharp decrease in serotonin may occur. Cocoa in chocolate contains tryptophan, increasing the availability of serotonin, relieving PMS symptoms, anxiety and depression.”

Despite the benefits, a dietitian warns. He warns that “it is important to consume balance, not excessive. Depending on the type of chocolate, such as chocolate that contains more sugar can intensify inflammation and colic pain.”
