Armenia and Azerbaijan have completed a text message in a peace agreement to end the conflict for a long time in Nagorno-Karabakh.
The authorities of Armenia and Azerbaijan announced on Thursday that the text of a peace agreement had ended that aims to put an end to the conflict of almost four decades between the nations of the southern Caucasus.
This is an important and surprising advance in a peace process that has been blocked several times and has been difficult for a long time.
The two postsoviet statements have been involved in hostilities since the late 1980s.
The difference over this region has led to several wars over the years, but the text agreed now raises the hope of a lasting solution to the long -standing conflict.
Conflict history
The mountainous and non-coastal region of Nagorno-Karabakh was recognized internationally as part of Azerbaijan, but had the majority of the Armenian ethnic group supported by Armenia. This situation created tensions between the two neighbors.
Until recently, much of the Nagorno-Karabakh was governed by the “unrecognized republic of Nagorno-Karabakh”, also known as the “Republic of Artsakh”.
Although Armenia has never officially recognized the independence of the region, it became its main financial and military defender, and the territory functioned as part of Armenia.
After many years of fighting pauses, with occasional explosions of violence, Azerbaiyan troops quickly took control of the region in September 2023, with the help of Turkish drones, defeating Armenian forces in a brief battle.
The majority of the Armenians fled and, on January 1, 2024, the “Republic of Nagorno-Karabakh” was formally dissolved.
