The year 2024 was the deadliest year for migrants, the main cause of death being.
At least 8938 people died in the world of migratory routes International Organization for Migration (IIM).
This number continues a five -year death trend every year, exceeding the previous record of 8747 deaths of migrants registered in 2023.
“The tragedy of the growing number of deaths from migrants worldwide is unacceptable and avoidable. Behind each number there is a human being, someone to whom the loss is devastating,” said the deputy director of Oim Operations, Ugochi Daniels.
July 2024 was the month with the greatest number of deaths and missing people (1130).
Asia registered the largest number of deaths, with 2778 registered people, followed by Africa, with 2242 deaths and Europe, with 233.
Worldwide, drowned deaths, road accidents, lack of adequate refuge, food, water and violence continued to be the main causes of the people who travel.
Since 2022, at least 10% of all registered migrant deaths have occurred due to violence. In Europe, the number decreased to 6%.
In 2024, this was largely due to violence against people in transit in Asia, with almost 600 lost lives on migration routes in the south and southeast of Asia.
Missing immigrants do not recover from the sea or identify
The real number of deaths and migrant disappearances is probably much greater, since many deaths are not documented due to the lack of official sources.
Since 2014, the remains of more than 30,000 people who lost their lives during migration have not recovered.
According to the missing immigrants of IIM, there are probably tens of thousands of families who have loved ones who only miss along the routes of the central and western Mediterranean to Europe.
“The increase in the number of deaths is terrible by itself, but the fact that thousands of people continue to identify every year is even more tragic,” said Julia Black, coordinator of the IIM missing migrants project.
“In addition to the despair and problem solving that families that have lost a loved one, the lack of more complete data about the risks faced by migrants hinders the responses that save lives.”
The deadliest route is the Central Mediterranean route, where more than 24,000 people died in the last decade.
In Europe, the migratory routes that caused the most fatal victims were those of the Western Balkans and the United Kingdom channel.
The Western Balkan Route is generally used by migrants, including asylum seekers, who arrive in Greece or Bulgaria from Türkiye and try to reach Western or North Europe.
“The increase in the number of deaths in so many regions of the world shows why we need an international and holistic response that can avoid more tragic lives of lives,” says Daniels.
