The new Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney expressed his aspiration today (Friday) to speak with the President of the United States Donald Trump “in time”, while underlining his country “will never be, in any way, part of the United States”.
In a speech after his constitutional oath, Carney stressed that “respects what Trump is trying to achieve … and we have made progress with Trump and we will find a solution to existing differences”, but described the conversation that Canada is the 51st state in the United States as “crazy” and that “this vision is crazy”.
This statement came in response to the comment of the American Secretary of State Marco Rubio to journalists after the meeting of the group hosted by Canada.
Rubio said that Trump “considers that Canada’s adhesion to the United States will be better”, noting that there is “a dispute between the position of the president and the position of the Canadian government”.
