Head of Civil Protection: 114 burning forest fires 23 Mexican states
The National Coordinator of Civil Protection Laura Velázquez reported that there were 114 forest fires across Mexico at 8 p.m., according to the National Forestry Commission (Conafor).
She said that 46 of these fires are under control of at least 80% while the other 68 are less contained, but do not currently represent a risk for human life.
Velázquez said the 114 fires burn in 23 different states and that 20 are in protected natural areas. Citing information from Conafor, the Civil Protection Head said that around 38,405 hectares of land was affected by fires.

An image she showed showed 16 fires active in the northern state of Chihuahua, 12 in Michoacán, 11 in Guerrero, 11 in Oaxaca and 10 in Morelos. Among the flames of Morelos, four in the municipality of Tépoztlán, where Fires also consumed the forest in March.

Velázquez said that a little less than 4,000 firefighters are trying to turn off the flames. They include compliance and military personnel as well as firefighters employed by governments and volunteers of states and municipalities.
“It is very important to emphasize that there are eight planes and eight helicopters who help fight fires,” said Velázquez.
Later in the press conference, the chief of civil protection said that there were “signs” that some of the fires had been deliberately enlightened.
Velázquez said that the law enforcement authorities are investigating and that when “official and reliable data” is available, it will announce it.
She also noted that three firefighters had lost her life this year while working to extinguish forest fires, especially one in Oaxaca last month.
Precipitation in 2025 well below the average in recent decades
Before presenting information on the 114 active forest fires, Velázquez stressed that the accumulated quantity of precipitation in Mexico between January 1 and April 6 was 32.7% lower than the average of the same period between 1991 and 2020.

The government wants banks to reduce loan costs
