What pyramids in Teotihuacán can you climb?

Visitors are again allowed to climb the pyramid of the moon at the Teotihuacán archaeological complex near Mexico after five years. The National Institute of Anthropology and History (INAH) announced the decision in the context of efforts to stimulate tourism in the Teotihuacán valley.

The authorities closed the pyramid of the Moon to the climbers in March 2020 during the Cavid-19 pandemic, and kept it closed while Oin finished work to preserve the structure.

“The climbing of the pyramid will be authorized from Monday, May 19, 2025, following conservation and improvement work to ensure the safety of visitors,” said Inah before removing the safety cords around the pyramid.

Access is only authorized at the top of the first section, which consists of five platforms and 47 steps. The higher levels remain closed to preserve the physical integrity of the monument.

During the closure, Inah said it worked to improve the visitors’ safety pyramid. Structural improvements include ruin staircase repairs, professional cleaning and handling hand adjustments to ensure the safety of visitors.

Inah also said that the surrounding municipalities have undertaken to preserve and protect the cultural heritage in Teotihuacán.

About Teotihuacán

Located about 50 kilometers north-east of Mexico City, Teotihuacán was one of the most important prehispanic cities in Mexico and mesoamic. Its name in Nahuatl means “place where the gods were created”, a name given by the centuries of Mexico after the abandonment of the site.

Entrance fees at the archaeological complex are 100 Mexican pesos, with exemptions for the elderly, children under the age of 13, retirees, pensioners, people with disabilities, teachers and students with a valid identity document.

Built between 200 and 450 AD, the pyramid of the Moon is located at the northern end of the avenue des morts (Calzada de Los Muertos). It is the second largest Pyramid in Teotihuacán – after the Pyramid of the Sun – and served as an important ceremony and ritual center.
