When is the next earthquake alert exercise in Mexico City?

Mexico will carry out one of the two annual earthquake warning exercises on Tuesday morning to test its emergency intervention capacities in the center and southwest Mexico. The authorities encourage everyone to participate.
Wireless emergency alarms and emergency alerts are expected to activate at 11:30 a.m. on Tuesday. The exercise will be based on a hypothetical earthquake of the 8.1 amplitude centered just offshore in the Gulf of Tehuantepec.
President Claudia Sheinbaum described the exercise “one of the most relevant prevention and civil protection exercises” that Mexico will organize this year.
Emergency staff and security agents will make inspections in their respective operational areas.
At the same time, naval staff will carry out an exercise in the tsunami along the Pacific coast.
Laura Velázquez Alzúa, coordinator of the National Civil Protection Agency in Mexico, said that the first emergency exercise of the year “promotes not only a culture of prevention, but also allows us to assess emergency protocols and interinstitutional coordination”.
Tuesday’s exercise will activate the alert infrastructure of the country’s earthquakes, which includes nearly 15,000 speakers dispersed in 10 states (México State, Guerrero, Morelos, Puebla, Jalisco, Colima, Michoacán, Oaxaca, Tlaxcala and Chiapas) and Mexico. Alert messages will also sound on radio, television and, in the metropolitan region of Mexico City, on mobile phones.
It will be the second time that the mobile phone alert system has been tested, and its effectiveness would represent an important advance in early alert technology. Chile is the only country in the Americas with a centralized national alert system.
The Mexico digital and telecommunications agency has carried out 10 silent tests of mobile phone alert technology with the cooperation of telecommunications companies Telefónica, Telcel and AT&T. The system should send written messages with an alarm to five million mobile phones. Tuesday, the message will say: “This is an exercise.”
Also on Tuesday, the National Emergency Commission (CNE) will meet with the virtual participation of the 31 governors and the mayor of Mexico City. The CNE will carry out an analysis of the exercise and will publish a performance review thereafter.

The instructions will be communicated to passengers using public transport when the alarm sounds. Metro users in Mexico can expect the trains to stop for three minutes during the exercise.
THE most recent earthquake exercise In Mexico, took place on September 19, 2024, the anniversary of the earthquakes of 1985 and 2017 in the center of Mexico.
The authorities have given reminders of the importance of listening to public messages and studying emergency personnel instructions. Among their recommendations, there is to use these exercises to identify safe places, exhaust routes and prepare an emergency “Go bag”, including non -perishable foods, water bottles, first aid, a flashlight and important personal documents.
