Aveiro: the debate on mobility has given “motto” for the local countryside

The first debate that collected some of the “protagonists” already announced by the imminent local elections in Aveiro this Saturday, and other representatives of the parties who accepted the challenge, highlighted politically correct unanimously in favor of better planning and measures to guarantee “active mobility”, which was the theme proposed by the Cylaveiro association. An attempt to guarantee the commitments for those who “pedal” in advance, at a time when the electoral programs are still simple sketches. Other topics necessarily interconnected have also been discussed, such as public transport, parking, urban planning or civic participation.

Luís Souto (PSD) confirmed that he will not be able to “attack” his brother, candidate for PS in a place he has already played, reiterating that he will not fail to propose corrections in the municipal management of Ribau Esteves.
The proposals abound Alberto Souto (PS), but the old Edil continues to divide the time, justifying himself also with the management of 20 years, different terms and two presidents later.
John Moniz, the BE list, has chosen to “divide the evil for villages”, trying to “capitalize” to the left and right.
A debate in which there was another candidate for the confirmed chamber, Miguel Gomes, of the liberal initiative (which is currently without elected), as well as João Almeida, representative of Pan (which started with two vowels in the municipal assembly) and João Quintela, from Livre (without elected).
“Ruture proposals”
Alberto Souto advanced with “breakage proposals”, to start the measures with fixed -term effects, such as the peding of the historic center towards the elimination of the car, also on Avenida Lourenço Peixinho. More “consensual”, he admitted, it is to improve transport because “scarcely sized” bonds remain. “For the race” of the recent declaration of Aveiro and ílhavo as a “free technological area” by the government, has launched the challenge of making Aveiro the first city with mutuals without drivers, for example to serve Lourenço Peixinho Avenue.
Return to “Day without a car”
Luis Souto wasted no time to try to “cut” his brother’s enthusiasm, facing him incisively that he even surprised many who were looking at the Atlas: “The candidate PS was in the eight -year -old house and did nothing of this”, he said, “in addition to” the creation of “a very strong condition”, which was the opening of the opposition tunnel of the PSD, to bring more cars to the city. He also questioned short -term interventions on the avenue after the investment made there, also admitting “the need for adjustments”. As for the proposal of autonomous vehicles, he recalled that Aveiro did a job done in the area, as part of the Aveiro Tech City program, including gender vehicles tests. In terms of public reflection, he showed opening to reintegrate Aveiro on the day of the European initiative “Without Auto”, which Ribau has always devalued.
Required “consistency” in the proposals
João Moniz has shown that he was “perplexed” when he heard the list of PS who defended six underground parking lots, asking for “consistency”, given the positions taken into consideration, against Cave do Rossio and now to present proposals with “the same logic”.
Alberto Souto had to respond to criticism. Information on the tunnel, he said it was “an option for the future, to grow the nascent city”, noting that “the error was upstream”, creating traffic jams on the avenue “that did not exist”. As for the new parking lots, they will need “the cars that already exist”, solving problems such as those of Beira Mar, “and not bring more cars”. Affirmation as “Father of Bugas”, the candidate PS defended a new system, buga 3 “, for new types, transport and children”.
Weigh “cost / benefit”
Miguel Gomes (Il) left doubts about the investment in the parking lots when Rossio happened, for the public burden he implied. Without questioning the option taken, Luís Souto insisted on the evaluation of the costs / benefits of the proposals presented. “We cannot return to the past,” he said, in reference to the financial difficulties that the sent after the direction of Alberto Souto had to face.
Alberto Souto defended the need to build cycle indications, including connections with the parishes (non -existent) and the public space “recover” for bicycles, to frame the creation of squares in the parishes or the renaturalization of the flows.
For Luís Souto, the changes, “before, cross the” mentality “, since” although not bad “Aveiro uses less bicycles than other municipalities in the region, no problem agreeing that it is necessary to give a push in the expansion of the cycling network, also proposing” incentives “, with” points “to exchange discounts on public services”.
“Work much more” and “reduce the cars”
According to the opinion of João Moniz, it is necessary to put the city “turn” to people and not to cars when it comes to “priorities”, as well as the adaptation of the public space in this regard, which has become very problematic, according to Blockman’s opinion, from the moment in which the Chamber has abdicated that he had a municipal mobility company.
João Quintela sees a long way to go to Aveiro, so it is necessary to “work much more”. “Reducing the number of cars” is essential for João Almeida, citing the following examples from European cities looking for a better quality of life. Miguel Gomes defended adequate planning, to be “updated with the participation of everyone”.
Lost transport and bicycle users of Aveiro
The census indicates that Aveiro has lost 35% of public transport users in a decade and 13% of bicycle users, with a private car increasing by 5%. Positive, it will be the growth of bicycle use, for example on Vera Cruz – Glory (67%).
