The City Council of Aveiro (CMA) promotes the return of one of the most emblematic traditions of the city: the upgraders of the Arcos, in Melo Freitas Square, also known as “Under the Archeses”.

Since the beginning of the twentieth century, this place has been known by its entertainment newsstands, which were part of the urban identity of Aveiro. More than a care and brightness service of the shoe, this space was a meeting and sociability point, in which the titles of the newspapers and the news and the programming of the city, the country and the world were accompanied.
In order to honor this traditional profession and enhance the historical meaning of the place, CMA has developed a new banking fun, in a contemporary project performed by the Larus company. The structure has a modern design, inspired by the engaging art novelties and at the emblematic doors of the square.
This space now returns to life with the collaboration of one of the ancient amazement of Arcos, thus recovering an icon of the urban landscape of Aveirense and contributing to the conservation of the material and intangible heritage of the city. The initiative also aims to sensitize the new generations for identity offices, saving memories and traditions that are part of the collective history of Aveiro.
The Arcos Glasses Banking operates, in an experimental period, until 30 September 2025, on Saturdays from 14 to 18:00 and Sunday and holidays, from 10:00 to 13:00.
