Can the city become an outdoor classroom?

Have you ever imagined walking with your family or friends through the streets of the city and having fun playing with an educational application? What if this game promote the learning of the natural, cultural and scientific legacy of the city of Aveiro, helping to build a more sustainable future?
By Lucia Pombo *
This is exactly what Education proposes, an innovative project coordinated by Lúcia Pombo, researcher of the University of Aveiro Cidtff and financed by the foundation for science and technology. Education came from the success of Edupark, in which children and adults explore the infant D. Pedro Park using augmented reality, discovering species of trees, historical tiles and scientific curiosities during play and learning.
With education, the park has given way to the city. The application now invites us to explore the emblematic roads and buildings of Aveiro, transforming them into authentic external classrooms, where it is learned in a contextual, authentic and fun way. The city becomes a living laboratory, in which citizens take on the role of “active scientists” and agents of change. Everything happens through challenges, augmented reality, scores and interactive paths – always with the company of the Flamingo mascot!
One of the most innovative educational characteristics is to allow teachers, students and members of the community to actively participate in the creation of their educational games, adapted to school curricula and local challenges. This collaborative and creative approach can be applied to any city in the world, making the project scalable and truly global. It is a way to learn to do, which simultaneously promotes citizenship, scientific thought and consciousness for sustainability – all with a strong interdisciplinary basis and the connection of knowledge to the lived reality.
And how to give concrete form to this path of transformation? With the release of the book “Lessons learned – education”, an abundantly illustrated work that crosses narrative, science and game. More than a simple book, it is an interactive experience that integrates a game between its pages and invites the reader to explore, in a playful way, the main products, the learning and impacts of the project. All presented in accessible language, designed to reach an audience of all ages.
The book will be presented at the project’s closing event, on June 17, at 6.30 pm, at Atlas Building, in Aveiro. The session will be attended by representatives of the University of Aveiro, the City Council, the Centro Ciência Viva Factory and the education team. At this symbolic moment, a protocol will also be signed which guarantees the continuity of the project activities in the educational offer of the science factory. The program also includes a musical moment with violin and informal conviviality.
Admission is free and all registered participants will receive a free copy of the book. We are waiting for you! To guarantee your place and the book, sign up here: https://shorturl.at/v4m2o
