CEIP Puerto de Cabras hosted the basketball seminar ‘Viva de la Palma a Fuerteventura’ from 19 to 23 May, an activity framed in the deepening of the Cabirdo de Fuerteventura, through the advice of the craftsmanship. The training was responsible for the artisan teacher María Hernández, who shared his knowledge of traditional work with Palma with students, one of the most representative expressions of the canary cultural heritage.

The councilor of Cabildo Cabirdo, Lolina Negrín, highlights the value of this activity for the island and explains that through this project “this inheritance has the purpose of bringing our younger population because they will guarantee their continuity”. He also evaluated the students and highlighted his enthusiasm as a clear proof that “traditions are still alive when they are shared”.

Negrín reiterated the institutional commitment for this type of proposals and stressed that “from the advice of the crafts we will continue to work so that this professional activity is part of the educational environment, not only as a technique, but as an essential cultural value”.

The activity not only included a practical part, but also incorporated a precious teaching component in which Hernández transmitted to students the importance of patience, respect for nature and the value of the conservation of traditions.

Natural of the municipality of Pájara, María Hernández has learned this trade since childhood observing her father and grandmother. Since 2012 he has been practicing professionally as an artisan teacher, being a defender of the generational transmission of traditional trade. Although he has provided training for years, in the last three he has intensified his work in schools with the aim of sowing appreciation for cultural roots in the new generations.

The initiative was accepted with great interest by the students and teachers of the Center, who highlighted the educational value of this type of experience, connecting the past and present through manual work and creativity.
