European independent life day marked in Aveiro to request rights to guarantee
On May 3 (15:00), people with disabilities go to the street with concentrations and gears across the country. In Aveiro, he will have a concentration for the first time.

The European Day of Independent Life is marked throughout Europe on May 5th. Portugal will celebrate the previous Saturday, the 3rd, from 15:00, in various parts of the country. It aims to celebrate disability as an expression of human diversity and pride for the community, but also, and above all, to claim the rights they still have to guarantee.
This year, Comviti – March for Independent Life Organizational Committee, which integrates 26 organizations and collectives in the disability sector and various social movements, invites marches and concentrations that occur throughout the country.
“Our multiple identities are constantly canceled, ignored and neglected. We face unique and interconnected challenges with other forms of discrimination, which add up to oppressions and stigma.
The manifesto of the “march for independent life 2025” says “the fulfillment of the pillars of independent life – the foundations to ensure that all people with disabilities, visible or invisible, can live with dignity and freedom. It is time to transform words into action!”.

Dynamized for the first time in Portugal in 2018, “March for Independent Life” leads people with disabilities to make their reality visible, their bodies and their struggle visible. This year, for the first time, Aveiro is one of the cities that will have a concentration in Praça da República, against the municipal council of Aveiro.
According to the philosophy of independent life, people with disabilities can (and should) have control over their lives, make decisions on their daily life and set goals for themselves and their future. Individual freedom, self -determination and human dignity represent the basic values of this model and constitute fundamental rights of the condition of the human being and, therefore, people with disabilities.
Defends compliance with the following principles and values: access to education and employment; the use of public transport and public space; the right to health care; compliance with sexual and reproductive rights and the full experience of sexuality; access to information and communications; the availability of products and support equipment; the guarantee of adequate income and a dignified social support; the existence of accessible accommodation; Access to personal assistance services, integrated by a coordinated plan and gradual deistrationalization; Interparated support to promote Empowerment and the construction of a collective identity; the right to the car -rapprescentation; the free expression of one’s identity.
