According to information issued by the Eua Environment and Sea Studies Center newsletter (Cesam), the prototype, which replaces the previous 2023, incorporated “more advanced” cameras, combined with a laser system for detecting coastal batimetry.

“The combination of these technologies allows you to observe the formation of water and to better study the processes associated with coastal erosion”, with the data to be collected on an innovative platform provided, it will allow you to help you understand how erosion is formed, identify the most aggressive winters and the most vulnerable coastal locations.

Mira Beach has been identified as a coastal erosion “hotspot” of the central area of Portugal, motivating several academic investigation projects in the context of a collaboration protocol that celebrates with the local municipality.

Paulo Baganha, researcher of Cesam/DGeo, said that the new monitoring platform “is significantly more advanced and currently unique in the country with these skills applied to monitoring the coastal strip and erosion”.

The information of Praia de Mira, considered an iconic example of practical application “, allow, for example, to help take measures to” safeguard the dune cord and guide the necessary interventions more effectively “, as well as” understand the mechanisms associated with climate change “or the development of adaptation and mitigation strategies.

Projects

»Project-Videomonitoring Atlantic Missions System to provide real time, evaluation services of the optical coast;

»Shoresaffty Project – Top asymmetrical model that includes, for the beach emergency area, the automatic creation of the topographical model with video conjugation and laser. In the submerged part, batter printing methods will be applied to estimate coastal batimetry.

Associated company

The investigation is also under development in collaboration with the company R5 Marine Solutions, responsible for the implementation of technologies and, currently partly, member of the Living Lab of the Aagora Project (See the website of the Portuguese demonstrator of the A-Aagora project).
