Pedro Sánchez asks the new Pope, Leo XIV, to strengthen the “defense of dialogues and human rights”
The president of the government, Pedro Sánchez, congratulated this Thursday the new Pope, Leo XIV, elected this day by the Conclave as a successor of Francisco. In a widespread message through social networks, Sánchez asked that his pontificate “Contribute to the strengthening of dialogue and the defense of human rights in a world that needs hope and unity”.
The new Pontiff, whose birth name is Robert Francis Prevost Martínez, becomes the first American Pope in the history of the Church, as well as in the first Agostino to reach the throne of San Pietro. In addition to its American nationality, it also has Peruvian citizenship and Spanish ancestors from the maternal part, which strengthens its international profile.
Leo XIV was chosen in the fourth vote of the Conclave, held this Thursday morning, and was welcomed with expectations for his history in defense of migrants, his sensitivity to the poorest and their involvement in great global challenges such as climate change.
