The UD Las Palmas pays homage to its sporting history with the presentation of the book “The Other Ud” | Palmas
On the occasion of the 75th anniversary of the entity, the UD Las Palmas celebrated on Wednesday the presentation of “The other UD”, a book written by the journalist Manuel Borrego who saves and enhances the club’s different sports sections in its history, beyond professional football. The appointment took place at the structures of the Metropole Swimming Club, a symbolic space for the sports memory of the archipelago.
The act, led by the journalist Jorge Betancor, brought together between 150 and 200 people, including numerous historical athletes from the club. The president of Ud Las Palmas, Miguel Ángel Ramírez; The author of the book, Manuel Borrego; Begoña Santana, former basketball player and current technical director of the Canary Islands Basketball Club; and Lorenzo Rodríguez, president of the UD swimming section.
During their interventions, the speakers highlighted the symbolic and social value of this sporting inheritance. Manuel Borrego shared the emotion experienced during the writing process: “I was moved by the passion for the shield and love for the protagonists who told me their experiences”. “The UD came to have almost a hundred swimming medals, as well as basketball, handball, modern pentathlon sections … are initiatives that have dignified the shield,” he added.
Begoña Santana expressed its gratitude to the club: “We live great moments. Through the UD Las Palmas we created the first section to Escaleritas.” While Lorenzo Rodríguez said that this tribute “is the only way to last in history and that people remember all the sections that the entity had”.
For his part, our President Miguel Ángel Ramírez said: “This extraordinary book saves a legacy that, for too long, has remained in the shade. The other is, in fact, the same that we continue to build today”. He also highlighted the club’s current commitment with an supplementary vision of sport, through his foundations and his work in inclusion, basic sports and social fabric.
One of the most emotional moments of the afternoon was the symbolic delivery of the book to the representatives of each of the sports sections. Former sports teams such as swimming 72, synchronized swimming, pentathlon, male and female basketball, chess, handball, athletics and women’s football, in an act of recognition that has closed with a large family photo.
