More than 150 schoolchildren participate in the release of three sea turtles recovered on the coast of Fuerteventura

The Cabirdo de Fuerteventura, through the Ministry of the Environment directed by Carlos Rodríguez, has released three Turtles Bobas (Caretta Caretta) to Playa Blanca, in the municipality of Puerto del Rosario. These loose are framed in the “at home” environmental education project,
With which the society of the island promotes awareness and knowledge of marine biodiversity between the school population.

On this occasion, more than 150 CEP students participated, the Oliva and El Castillo, who had the opportunity to know the recovery process of these threatened species and accompany them to their return to the sea.

The three turtles were treated in the recovery and conservation center of the Morro Jable sea turtles after being saved in different parts of the Majorera coast. The causes of admission are directly related to human activity, such as registration with marine garbage or accidental capture with the hook.

The first turtle, admitted on February 5 after appearing to Cofete, presented a serious inscription to the right front fin, which forced its amputation.

The second turtle, saved on March 21 on the Cozza beach, reached the center with signs of dehydration and a fracture in the left front. The amputation of the limb was also necessary due to the damage caused.

The third specimen was delivered by a sailor to the Corralejo dock on April 7th. A hook was detected in the esophagus, which was extracted through surgery.

The Minister of the Environment, Carlos Rodríguez, underlined the importance of these activities to “educate environmental values from an early age and promote respect for our marine fauna, increasingly threatened by the impact of waste and bad practices”. He also thanked the collaboration of teachers, technical staff and citizens who informed the presence of wound fauna.

From the Ministry, the importance of notifying 112 is remembered before any discovery of wound or blocked marine fauna, to guarantee their attention and contribute to its conservation.
