The delegation of medical colleges at the University of Salanka and the University of Valdolide has expressed their opposition to the establishment of new colleges in the region, which considers them not to fit the doctors and they can reach the profession. For this reason, they asked the Board of Directors and the Ministry of Health to “rethink this measure” and bet on the policies that really improve teaching in colleges where there is already a drug.

The death of the students in the public has made clear a letter to their opposition to the opening of new medical colleges, stipulated in León and Burgos, which is part of the agreement through which Salamanca will be veterinary, and it specializes in many colleges in Spain that also generates controversy.

Studies claim that there is always an increase in the quantity in the places of studying medicine accompanied by the same quality. On the contrary, they believe it is necessary to enhance the working conditions of doctors, increase the places of Mir and ensure that medicine continues to be taught based on excellence.

Students consider that there are many problems that will cause colleges proliferation. First, the teaching of medicine requires teachers and adequate infrastructure to ensure quality training. The creation of new colleges without a relative increase in resources is a clear decrease in the desired teaching quality, which will have an effect on the safety of patients themselves in the end.

He condemns that “in our colleges there are serious problems in employing faculty members, a problem that will be more clear when our current teachers retire in the coming years.”

A few practices, Mir

In addition, they refer to the lack of practices in hospitals and that the new colleges will not solve the lack of doctors in Castilla Y León, because there are now empty Mir places. “This is partly due to the working conditions and salary that leads many professionals to migrate to other regions or countries (in 2023-2024 there were 47 places of family and community medicine),” they say. “

They also consider that there is a danger from the medical education trade through the presence of more competition and incompatibility with the places of the presented Mir, which will generate surgeon without the possibility of specialization, which leads to professional frustration and waste of public resources.

Finally, they warn that they are a surplus of doctors that can be a problem. In the coming years, it will be necessary to have an important dilution of generations for retirement, but it is placed for many years and continues to graduate and is entitled to generate excess of the replacement of generations in the health system.

In the next decade, the aging of the medical staff in Spain is expected. Especially in societies such as Castilla Y León, where a large part of the current professionals is about to retire, this phenomenon can generate saturation of new graduates without adequate planning to enter them into work.

In addition, due to the opening of new colleges and the increase in places that occurred in the current regions, it is estimated that in 2030 there will be more than 7,400 medical graduates. This graduated 2023-2024 out of 6400 students, 13 % lower, which may increase unemployment, especially working in the profession, which may cause low quality of care.
