In its decision, the Council called “all the parties to the conflict and to other armed authorities to immediately stop fighting throughout the state of South Sudan and to engage in a political dialogue”, as well as to end the violence against civilians.

In the decision, which was issued by a majority of 12 votes and three countries abstaining to vote (Russia, China and Pakistan), the Security Council in particular expressed its concerns concerning reports speaking of “the random use of explosive barrels”.

Human Rights Watch accused the army south of Sudan of using planes to throw incendiary bombs in areas northeast of the country, in a bombardment that killed dozens.

South Sudan is a poor country that suffers from chronic security and political disorders, but the resumption of fighting in the state of the Haut-Nile (north) between the forces faithful to the president Salva Kiir and another faithful to his rival Riek Machar, who is the first vice-president which was arrested at the end of the march made fear of the trigger of a new civil war in the young state.

In its decision, the United Nations Security Council extended until April 30, 2026 the mandate of the United Nations peacekeeping mission responsible for working to calm down and prevent the return of the civil war.

During the session, loading the American ambassador to the United Nations Dorothy Xia was criticized for the transitional government in southern Sudan, considering that it would be an “irresponsible” order which gave it more money to organize the elections in the light of their “failure”.

Xia called on the international community to “withdraw southern Sudan from the edge of the abyss, including by the United Nations Mission in South Sudan”. (Al -Nahar)
